Tyrone H. Mitchell was raised on the south side of Chicago along with his two brothers. He was born the middle child. He has a “play sister” Lisa Stamps-Pierce, who he became friends with when he was 7 years old and she was 5 years old. They are still dear friends to this day. His mom and dad met in church, and would have celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary in June, 2005. Dad went home to be with the Lord in May, 2005.
His maternal Grandfather was the most influential family member for Ty. Being one of 43 grandchildren (no, that’s NOT a typo); only two grandchildren shared the birthday month of August with his Grandfather; Ty was one of them. His Spiritual connection and prayer work was so deep; often his peers mentioned to him that they were somewhat jealous of his connection with spirit. Ty saw angels and visions and experienced unusual spiritual gifts around the age of 13. From that point on, he truly knew that Spirit was channeling through him. Because he had such an intense Spiritual awakening, he spent his teenage years focusing his energy on Spirit instead of dating and other usual teenage pursuits.
That voice, you want to know about that signing voice, right? Tyrone always loved music, but wasn’t allowed to sing at the Baptist church he was raised in because his voice was considered “too heavy”. Pastor Rev. C. J. Brooks, at Shiloh Baptist Church, noticed his faithfulness to the choir and said that Ty should be allowed to do something. So, at the tender age of 12, he became the Assistant Conductor at Shiloh. It wasn’t until he went to college at age 32, that his astounding voice was totally unleashed. Divorced after 12 years of marriage, Ty began his college life as an adult single father of two boys, who have since made him the “favorite grandfather” of 6 (4 boys and 2 girls). After 10 years of diligent schooling Ty finished his degree in BGS Choral Conducting. “My passion was always to conduct in the church arena”, said Ty. “Graduating college was one of the happiest times in my life. After that; things just started happening, doors just started opening.” Ty put the foot work to his prayer work!
Ty’s favorite secular vocal singer is the late Luther Vandross. “He just sends me. I’d attend his concerts and I would scream and fall in the isles. I did notice I was not alone.” Ty’s favorite spiritual composer is the late Moses Hogan. “When listening to his musical arrangements and original compositions I often find it has touched the hearts and souls of all ages. I attended his concerts and I did not fall in the isles, not because I didn’t want to; I didn’t have an isle seat, but was frozen in amazement of Moses expertise. It has been years since I have been captivated by the experience of any vocal ensemble where the anointing and spirit was so embraceable. The musicianship, chorale tonality, breathing, crescendo and decrescendo, facial expressions, choral presence and vocals were flawless. “WOW!”
One of the phrases Ty often says is, “You just don’t know whose life you may have touched.” It has helped him and others move forward fearlessly in times of doubt. He has dearly touched countless lives with his conducting, his melodious voice and his spiritual contributions! He has an amazing ministry. I now introduce you to Tyrone H. Mitchell, Sr. –affectionately called “Ty”. I’m sure you will enjoy his CD titled “ Blessed and Encouraged”. |
